Learn: English Articles

Short guide to the articles a, an and the with examples and small activities to practise.

What are Articles?

Articles are small words we use before nouns. There are two kinds: indefinite (a, an) and definite (the).

Definition β€” with pictures

An article is a small word placed before a noun to show whether the noun is general or specific. Look at the pictures:

a

Use a before one of many (consonant sound). Example: a cat.

an

Use an before vowel sounds. Example: an apple.

the

Use the for something special or already known. Example: the moon.

Types of Articles

  • Indefinite articles: a and an β€” used for non‑specific or first‑mentioned nouns (one of many).
  • Definite article: the β€” used for a specific or already known noun (the only one or previously mentioned).

How to use them β€” quick rules

  • Use "a" before a noun that starts with a consonant sound: a cat, a book.
  • Use "an" before a noun that starts with a vowel sound: an apple, an umbrella.
  • Decide by the sound, not the first letter: an hour (silent h); a university (yoo sound).
  • Use "the" when both speaker and listener know which specific thing is meant: the moon, the book on the table.
  • Use the with unique things, superlatives, ordinal numbers and names of some locations: the tallest tree, the first chapter, the Himalayas.

Examples β€” how to use in sentences

1. I saw a cat in the garden.

"a" β€” a non‑specific cat, first mention.

2. She ate an apple.

"an" β€” apple begins with a vowel sound; any apple, not a particular one.

3. The moon looks bright tonight.

"the" β€” the moon is unique and specific.

4. He is a university student.

"a" β€” pronounced "yoo", consonant sound so use "a".

5. This is the book I told you about.

"the" β€” specific book already known to listener.

6. I need an hour to finish.

"an" β€” "hour" begins with a vowel sound because "h" is silent.

7. She bought a red dress and the shoes to match.

"a" (first mention of dress), "the" (specific shoes already identified).

8. The first prize goes to Sam.

"the" used with an ordinal ("first") to indicate a specific item.
