Comprehensive CVC Word List

CVC words grouped by vowel (a, e, i, o, u) and common word families.

What is a CVC word?

CVC stands for consonant-vowel-consonant. A CVC word is a simple three-letter word that follows this pattern: it starts with a consonant, has a short vowel sound in the middle, and ends with another consonant.

Here are a few examples:
  • c (consonant) + a (short vowel) + t (consonant) = cat
  • d (consonant) + o (short vowel) + g (consonant) = dog
  • s (consonant) + u (short vowel) + n (consonant) = sun

In CVC words, the middle vowel almost always makes its short vowel sound. Because this pattern is consistent and easy to recognize, CVC words are among the first words children learn to read.

Instead of memorizing these words, children learn to decode them by blending the individual letter sounds together. For example, they sound out /c/ – /a/ – /t/ and blend the sounds to read "cat."

Unlike sight words, which are often learned through memorization, CVC words help children practice phonics by applying their knowledge of letter sounds. Mastering CVC words builds strong decoding skills and lays the foundation for confident, independent reading.
