What is a Noun?

A noun is a naming word. It names a person, place, animal, thing, or idea. Think of nouns as the names you can point to or talk about.

Examples — nouns in sentences

Person
  • The teacher smiled. (teacher = noun)
  • Sam waved at us. (Sam = noun)
  • My mother cooks dinner. (mother = noun)
Place
  • We visited the museum. (museum = noun)
  • The park is near my house. (park = noun)
  • The beach was sunny. (beach = noun)
Animal
  • The dog barked loudly. (dog = noun)
  • A bird sang on the tree. (bird = noun)

How to use nouns — quick tips

  • Nouns name people, places,animal, things, or ideas. Ask: "Who?" or "What?" to find the noun in a sentence.
  • Proper nouns name a particular person or place and start with a capital letter: Sam, Delhi, Monday.
  • Common nouns are general names: boy, city, day.
  • Nouns can be singular (one) or plural (more than one): book / books.

Types of Nouns — with simple definitions & examples

Common Noun
Definition: A general name for a person, place, or thing.
Examples: dog, city, school
Proper Noun
Definition: The name of a specific person, place, or thing. Always starts with a capital letter.
Examples: Riya, London, Mount Everest
Collective Noun
Definition: Names a group of people or things.
Examples: team, family, flock
Abstract Noun
Definition: Names a feeling, quality or idea you cannot touch.
Examples: love, kindness, bravery
Concrete Noun
Definition: Names something you can see or touch.
Examples: table, apple, cat
Compound Noun
Definition: Two words joined to make one noun.
Examples: toothpaste, playground, mother-in-law
